What to know before you hire a “Professional”
Here are some important things to know before you hire someone to do work in your home.
Make sure the company or person you hire has the following:
1.A valid Virginia Contractor’s License.
Without a valid Contractor’s License, you have no recourse if something goes wrong.
2. Liability Insurance.
Without Liability Insurance, any damage done to your home by the person working will not be covered by the worker, which means any damage would come out of your pocket.
3. Workers Compensation Insurance.
Without Workers Compensation Insurance, if anyone working on your property gets hurt, YOU and/or YOUR Homeowner’s Insurance will be obligated to pay all hospital/doctor bills and loss of wage bills.
4. Virginia Sales Tax & Use License.
Without a Virginia Sales Tax & Use License, the person is not allowed to buy goods at wholesale and resell them to you.
5. Proof of Legally Being Allowed to Work in the U.S.
This one is a given.
All of the above items are readily available by all legitimate flooring stores. If you cannot obtain these items from the company/person who is taking your money, there is something wrong. All legitimate flooring stores and companies have all of this information available to make copies for you.
These are very important items to keep you and your property safe. There are a lot of people out there that are not following these laws. It may seem like you are getting a “good deal” and saving money by hiring some of these people, however, in the end it could cost you greatly.
